2008 Friends of Scouting (FOS): Pine Tree Council’s Annual Friends of Scouting (FOS) Fundraising Campaign is off and running. The York District Family FOS Goal for 2008 is $31,000.00. As of 5/1/08 we have raised $23,903.00 or 77% of our goal. FOS is an annual fundraising campaign that gives Scouts, their families and interested people in the community an opportunity to contribute to the financial support of the council. This fundraising campaign helps support the council in the following ways: camp maintenance, keep camp registration fees low, organizing new units, servicing existing units, maintaining service center including records, information and support staff, and support for professional staff. To schedule your unit’s Family Presentation, please contact Fred Chellis York District Family FOS Chairman at 698-5977 e-mail fchellis@comcast.net or Frank with your date and time. We currently have 40 units scheduled. Is your unit one of them?
York District Spring Camporee: Mark May 16-18, 2008 on your calendars at Spring Hill in South Berwick as the date and place for the Spring Camporee. (YD had their 2005 Spring Campore there.) Troop 338 of South Berwick will be hosting the camporee and the theme is “Veteran Appreciation”. Registration forms are available tonight and more information is on the T338 website, www.troop338maine.org.
York District Cub Scout Day Camp 2008: Mark July 7 - 11 and July 14 – 18 on your calendars as the dates for the York District Cub Scout Day Camp at Camp Nutter in Acton, ME. The theme for 2008 is “Super Heroes”. In 2007, 160 Cub Scouts and more than 60 volunteer leaders participated in the York District Day Camp Program. Where else can Scouts do crafts, cook, earn BB & Archery recognition, learn about nature and swim in a safe environment with 100 other Scouts?
To make sure we have another successful Day Camp season, we can always use volunteers to help run our program and they do not have to be current leaders to help out. Parents are welcome to participate as Day Camp Leaders. If you help with day camp, your scout’s fee will be reduced for the first scout. A great deal and you may even have some fun while you help out. For more information, please contact our Day Camp Director Diana Vermette at 324-2582 or 4vermette@msn.com.
Unit Inventory: Crew, Pack and Troop Leaders please mark, May 12-16, 2008 for the York District Spring Unit Inventory nights. Each unit will be contacted to verify the youth that are in your program. This is vital to make sure each youth is accounted for in York District. For more information, please contact our District Commissioner, Ernie Wiswell at 439-2668 or e-mail YOUR current roster to ewiswell@comcast.net.
Cub Scout Spring Recruitment: Now is a great time to begin recruitment for next fall. As a reminder, boys who are in kindergarten are eligible to become Tiger Scouts on June 1. This is a great way to have new scouts join your pack and take part in your summer activities. Fun Pack weekend, Portland Seadogs games, parades and any other activities your unit has planned for the summer. Please give Frank a call or send an e-mail for flyers or applications.
York District Pinewood Derby: The York District Pinewood Derby took place on Saturday, April 19 at the Vivian Hussey School in Berwick. The winners of the top five trophies were: Caleb P. (P-340), Nicholas L. (P-311), Damian B. (P-308), Nicholas B. (P-329) and Spencer B. (P-329). All of the medals and trophies were generously donated by Tire Warehouse. Congratulations to those Scouts who participated in the Derby! Thank You to Pack 313 of Berwick for hosting the event.
Unit Annual Planning: June is the month that many unit Scouting Programs start slowing down for the summer months but it also the BEST MONTH to start planning your Scouting Year for 2008-2009. All registered Scouters should be receiving the Scouting Magazine and in the May-June 2008 issue is information concerning your Annual Planning Meeting. A FULLY PLANNED Scouting Year is the IDEAL YEAR in SCOUTING. Take the time to plan out your unit’s year now. A well planned Scouting Year will keep our Scouts engaged in the Scouting Program and want them to stay in our Scouting Program. They deserve the best. Please plan ahead for them. It will make their time in Scouting fun and easier for you.
